Maybe using layer masks in a similar way to this video. Adapting this type of technique should permit the great look you had for the car and then the headlights can be merged in.
Not that I am expert in this subject but I have tried it a few times. I guess you will not see this at work either |

Never really played much with HDR, but yes it seems an ideal subject for it. I'll give that a go.
