They also charged for a new rocker cover gasket that came with original factory black engine paint!!

Every 6 mths regardless of milage is what does it for me. It may be subjective but I really do feel that it runs better after an oil-service.

I am getting a Sealey Oil extractor for Christmas so the job will be a bit easier now.

I once had customer who marked everything I changed all the parts and drew a smiley on them.after that he ensured I did his car all the time

Why do you think that there are mechanics selling cheap oil and filters down the pub?

Would this pump work for the gearbox oil too ???

YES. But there are Much cheaper pumps for the gearbox oil.
