Exclamation Why You Should Change Your Oil Filter Regularily

Check your oil filter housing now, or at least check it for integrity.

Currently working on a K-series lump that an old friend brought in which had seized due to lack of engine oil in the sump. The reason for the lack of oil was the filter housing corrosion. I recovered about a saucer full of oil from the sump. The top end, pistons, liners and cams are still wet with oil and are still in good shape for re-use.

Note the hole in the filter housing. The main bearing shells have turned through 90deg and gouged a groove in the block, nearly rendering it scrap. Have dressed it up and is looking good now.

Going to be fitting a new crank, mains, big end shells, and oil pump.

Blimey! That's certainly rather aged...!
We have a few brand new and genuine Oil Pumps here, and can do some good deals on them too.

The hole has been exaggerated with a screwdriver, was more of a weep. the whole underside of the car was covered in a film of oil, hence no real drips of oil showing on the driveway.

Indeed! - and if it has any sort of service history did the previous owner pay to have oil and filter changes that were never done?

I say this from experience with vauxhall and citroen company cars where we proved that jobs like air-filters and oil-filters were charged for at a service but never changed.

We simply marked the filters and checked them after the service.

Was fitted just over two years ago. Same oil all that time, although I don't know how miles it had done since then.

I don't understand why change oil without filter, because oil filter is relatively cheap.

There was never any oil or filter change in the last two years.

It is really cheap to change, but that's folks for you. Now he is paying dearly
