He chose black sills because it made the car look sleeker and longer. Painting the door posts the same black colour also helped in this because it "joined" the front and rear window sections visually. The black is neither gloss not matt - which helps to "lose" visually the components so treated. And that is why they are there.

Longbridge's colour coding of sills is preferred by some I know but it was driven by cost cutting - not by design. I can understand why those that prefer colour coded sills may also prefer to have the door posts colour coded with the rest of the body - each to his own but the less sleek and chunkier body style that results is a move away from the 75's individuality IMO.

As most of you know, Richard Wooley was the design chief for R40 and his brief was to emulate the 'real' Rovers from the 1950s and 60s. P5Bs from 1968 had the 'black' sills, as did P6s from 1970, and as has been alluded to here, it was to take away the slab sided look, by appearing to make the car shell look shallower in profile. The colour is 'satin' black, which is neither glossy or mat.

Roverite.

PS. I like the chrome 'B' pillar cappings.

Some days I really like them, some days not quite sure with a tourer that is 5 pillars chromed each side. One thing that is for certain it creates a lot of attention/ admiring glances(I like to think!) from other motorists, but then again it has got rather a lot of chrome on it.
