Engine Check Light & running Rough
Went for a drive this morning and all of a sudden the Engine Check Light started flashing and car started to run rough...... after stopping and listening to the exhaust at the rear, sounds like its misfiring....?? Can anyone advise.....

Think I found the problem. Slight bit of water in one of the plug chambers.... Cleaned out, seems to be running better. But Engine Check Light still on? Disconnected battery for 30 mins to see if it will clear.

If not - try pulling the leads off the plugs again (maybe even give a wee clean, spray some wd40 even - as you've had moisture ) and reconnecting them - it worked for me after i had oil in the plug socket. after cleaning the oil and curing the slight leak - i cured the misfiring and rough running, and after a few clean/checks the check engine light went off - it did come back on after a few hundred miles and pulling the leads off plugs 2 and 4 (plugs without the coil pack) checking they were clean and pushing back into place checking they're secure for connection - the light went off on start up Paul....... |

The cause might be a leaking inlet manifold gasket Adie.

Sorry for hijacking your post... got a similar problem
Was out today in ZTT and noticed engine check warning light lit up, car doesn't to be running rough although idles around 300 to 400 rpm ( is this normal? is it not a bit low for idle speed). I did try to replace my fob today on the key (plastic parts) as button bit worn, but had to change it back as with the blade, pcb, in the replacement fob, car wouldn't start (all lights illuminated).... could this be the cause of the illuminated check engine warning light? Am I okay to still drive the car with the check engine warning light lit? Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers Maurice |

No Maurice. There's something wrong there. MG Rover's figure is 750 rpm for your engine.
