Default M6 Accident

Another horrific accident on the M6 in the early hours this morning - six people in a car? five died!

I do hope that the personnel who attended this get the help they will need having confronted such a mess.

My father was in the traffic police in Northumberland the 60s and 70s. Attended all kinds of carnage including being first on scene at the 1969 fatal train crash at Morpeth. No counselling in those days

That would be the sleeper crash on the Morpeth curve. I think the actor Gerald Flood was on that train but not injured.

I'm very much afraid that many paramedics struggle to get the support they need to cope with the mental stresses of the work.

Ironically a paramedic friend has told me that it's not the big accidents that cause him stress - it's the neglected old lady he has to pick up off the floor because she's been there for two days on her own.

It was, my father and his co driver/radio man. In those days on the nightshift the traffic car out of Berwick patrolled the A1 as far south as Morpeth. They were sent to investigate a report of a train crash. The first thing they saw was the Deltic sitting on the platform still running, walked back a bit and shone their Pifco torches onto a coach virtually lying on its side. Legged it back to the car, reported what they'd seen then asked what they were supposed to do as the car's first aid kit was about the size of a biscuit box!

The poor little Micra would be struggling on the motorway with six adults inside.

That car was flattened. What a horrible site and tragedy.
