Yes I had one of them and it was shocking how low they would go but on the other hand it would go as high as 99.99 on a long down hill.

As far as 260's I did a trip up to Aberdeen which was mainly motorways for the 1000 miles and I averaged 26.6 over the 1000 odd miles. If these cars had been fitted with a 6th gear I am sure 30mpg average would have easily been achievable on a decent run as it would push the revs down to the under 2k mark which is the best for economy.

Around town and popping to the shop ect ect I find my ZTT averages 18mpg. It is shocking how often I have to fill it not because of the economy but mainly because it has such a small fuel tank.

As a buy the way I once managed 23mpg out of my Jensen over a 400 mile run, 7.2litre but I have fitted an overdrive so my car is doing 1850rpm at 70mph.

We wont have Petrol in another 50 years or so, lets enjoy it while we still do. Think our great grandchildren will think of our Hydrocarbon powered vehicles as we think of Steam engines. So sad.

Pity overdrives have gone the way of steam engines; great fan of them.
Thanks for the 50-year tip, Steve. I'm thinking of hoarding some petrol for when I'm 120 !

I could get 40mpg with my V8 SD1 Vitesse, once in 5th gear you could drive all day without changing (almost)

I once did the journey from home, just outside Ayr to Castle Douglas a distance of approx 70 miles. I pulled away in 2nd gear then up to 5th when leaving home and the next change was back to 2nd gear in Castle Douglas.

What a car, a genuine Rover V8

I've got 27mpg using brim to brim calculation before on a long steady run, so yeah, allowing for slight errors with computer figures I wouldn't put as a day-dreaming figure.

I've also got 8mpg before

With several posts agreeing, it looks like the answer to the question in post #1 is "27/28mpg". Just a tad more or less depending on percent of favourable/unfavourable conditions; just over the 30 is possible.

... in town in the winter months, 'enjoying that V8 growl' or simply overall (18/20???) is another matter. Depends so much on conditions and driving style.
Into the single figures is not unknown!

Just out of curiosity what sort of mpg does v6 get on a run, seeing as we get around 27/28 out of the v8.

Had a quick search, the V6 doesn't get a hell of a lot more. Varies between 28 and 32, some have had 34.

Once you have a car of a set size you need X amount of BHP to push that mass through the atmosphere and along the road at a set speed. It does not matter if you are using a 2.5 v6 or a 4.6 V8 to do that job apart from volumetric efficiency the same amount of HP is needed. So theoretically if all engines were as efficient as each other they would apart from frictional losses all use the same petrol to do a set speed.

On my way to work 99% dual carriageway and motorway I did a brim to brim on my v6 launch car. Ipk said 41mpg real world was 38.9mpg.

That was 70mph all the way.

That must of been the week that the VIS's were working properly
I can just get 35/36 on one of my 2.5 V6's (auto) at a leisurely 65 mph.
