Thanks for the heads up - After nearly two decades of not getting caught speeding (because I really try not to) I got done twice in three months.

First was a local village with a Camera Van when I was doing 34 in a 30 - that was in Hampshire - so I went on the driver awareness course an tried to eat £90's worth of biscuits in the break.

The second was in Dorset where I was happily thinking I was legal doing just under 40 in a 40 mph limit - when I had missed the fact that they had increased the 30mph limit area back into the old 40mph area.

I was done doing 37 in a 30mph zone.

Again I have been offered a driver awareness course so more pigging out on biscuits......

Around York there is a few more speed van's in operation as well. They have the larger vans but now they are using smaller vans as well.

Thats strange, I thought you couldnt be offered the course so soon after the first one . And anyway, 37 in a 30 zone is outside the allowed limits for a course ?

If you have attended the s a c, and get caught again within 3 years of the date of the course, you get the points.

They are a lot more people getting tickets and apparently they are cutting down on the SPA courses due to cutbacks and they apparently are not working as well as they hoped. My neighbour is on her maximum points and she drives like a nun, last month it was 34 in a 30 and if she gets any more within 6 months she is banned.

Easy money isn't it?
I wonder how much gets put back into road safety seeing that the whole reasoning behind the scam (wash my mouth out with soap!) is about road safety.

Well for many years the treasury paid out more in road safety grants than they received in speeding fines, i believe that changed in 2010.

My problem with the system is the way they are so sneaky, you never see them on a straight road in clear sight even though the majority of the traffic is 10mph over the limit ( like outside my house) but they will be around a corner as you slow down for a 30 limit or on a stretch of road that has an artificially slow limit for no apparent reason and it is not clearly marked.

I don't understand the logic of some speed limits, as you enter Cheltenham on the A40 it is 40mph but feels like it should be 30mph if you know what I mean yet on a dual carriageway that in my view should be 60 or 50 it is 30. Funny enough you never see a van on the bit as you enter Cheltenham but there is almost permanently a van on the stretch of dual carriageway and in fact a few weeks ago they were pulling people over and they had so many they were queuing to give there details.

It would be interesting to see actually how much money speeding fines earns the government. Maybe a freedom of information act?

I am lucky because - as I said in my post - one was in Hampshire and one in Dorset - and Counties do not talk to each other.

And 37 in a 30 is a "Band A" offence - which is 3 points or an Awareness Course.
