Default Alloy wheel refurb - how much does it cost?

Hi,
I just swapped my second car. I've got a jag x-type as well as my 75.

The alloys don't look good as the previous owner has painted them matt black and then kerbed them. I'd like to return them to silver. Funds are tight so I'm looking to keep costs down.

I guess my options are to find some in mint condition (on either gumtree or ebay) or to get a refurb. Last time I had a refurb was 2 years ago but the bloke doing it has since packed in. Please can I ask how much this typically costs as I can't remember what I paid. They are lightly scuffed but nothing serious requiring major repair. I'm in Reading.

Thanks,
Jim

When I had a set of straights a few years ago, I bought an alloy wheel refurb kit, in this was a tube of filler for the kerbing. After filling & sanding, a spray can or 2 of primer & silver paint was enough, along with laquer.
Alternatively, about £50 a wheel for powder coating

Dawn,

Put it on axle stands?

They do a drive in service as well, if you take the car to them and then go shopping for a few hours but costs are higher?

I have a 2nd set (original wheels for my car) to fit to my car for when i get round to a refurb of my 5 spokes.

Maybe another member nearby to you has a spare set of wheels they could loan ? - if even only Good enough to have the Car sitting - the tyres on my spare set are no Good for driving, but will do for being sat at the end of the Road while having a refurb done

I don't fancy the Same Day Service

Prices I've seen near me are £160-£200 for four wheels with tyres still on (removed and refitted after powdercoating - or new tyres fitted if supplied)

I paid £60 a wheel for the wheels to be done on Wurzel at Pro Alloys in Melksham.

Included in the price was leaving Wurzel with them for two days, having tyres removed and the wheels powder coated and I had a choice of colours as well. After the wheels were done Pro Alloys refitted the tyres and done the balancing of the tyres and wheels.

Photo of one of the wheels on Wurzel.

With City Wheel Refurbishment (old city powder coaters) if you contact them you can book to take your car there first thing in a morning, leave it there for the day & they take tyres off, refurb the wheels, refit tyres & balance the wheels £45 a wheel. That's for about 5 different colours. Others (& they do a wide range) are more expensive.

Had probably a dozen sets done by them now & all been top notch, Deffo value for money.

Regards

Paul

Thanks for the ideas and pricing info. Once I've sorted out the alloys this car will look great. For anyone looking for a cheap daily drive I can recommend the X-type diesel. You get a lot of for your money.
