Another vote for Auto Aid - been with them for centuries, and had them out at least twice back when my diesel had a wet Ecu... not too dear.

One day I'll get around to telling them I'm no longer employed by the NHS...

Just as bad as Morrisons giving 10% discount for teachers; yeah, those that didn't want to go back to work as it was too much trouble when it was simpler just to spend the money from the public purse from home.

We also have cover with GEM motoring assist. Personal cover for 2, covers all our cars, no age limit (on cars!).

They also produce a very nice magazine from time to time.

Much cheaper than AA and I did not like the need to haggle with AA every time renewal came through.

Have not had to use them so this recommendation must be limited to above.

I’m with RAC and pay about £18 a month for myself and my son and Have the option to have the car taken to a destination of our choice rather than the nearest garage, been with them for years. I think once it expires I need to look at Auto Aid....

I'm also with the rac I have just renewed mine .about £120 but this is for 15 months not 12 .and recovery to any destination . Also got 15 months last time I renewed as price had shot up and was thinking of leaving .they came back with a price a little less than previous year .but give me 15 months instead of 12 .so in last 2 years have been given 6 months free .. the price works out at a couple of pounds a week so happy with that . always worth a phone call to see what they can offer.it just annoying that they can't offer you the better deal to begin with..

Many moons ago I was walking to work and one of the advertising boards was stating that if you had not "called out" the RAC in the las 12 months they would reimburse £25. Great, I thought, I haven't used them for about 3 years; so I should be getting the Wonga soon. Weeks passed and nothing. So, I thought, perhaps they do it upon renewal. Month later the renewal gumph arrives but no sign of a discount. Ring the centre and speak to a wage operator who states I'm not entitled.

Mr. Enraged then asked to speak to the salaried supervisor. I told her about the advertising campaign details. After some muttering in the background they came back to the phone and said "for new customers only". Right, I said, this is now an ex-customer. Wrote to the CEO (in them days one was also a member of the RAC Club in Pall Mall) to complain about the treatment to a 22 year member. Nice letter back asking me to reconsider my contract termination and sent me a SatNav as a taster (bribe). You would laugh if you set eyes on the technology of then.

Never signed up to a breakdown service since and have had to call upon their services three times since at a total cost of about £400. I'm quids in.

I said that to the guy from the RAC who approached me (some 40 years ago) at an M5 services on a trip to Cornwall. I told him I built the car and I can fix anything that might go wrong; to go and pedal his services to someone else.

On the way back the fibre cam on my Ford V6 went bang and with it the valves. Got towed off the motorway to a village outside Exeter and stayed the night in a B&B before getting my brother to do a 350 round trip to bring us home, leaving the car with a local garage. I then joined the AA, waited a week and got a train and bus back to my car. About 12 hours later, via many miles in a six car transporter my car was back home in north London. I've had breakdown cover ever since and learnt not to be a smug NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-
