What's this for ?

While in car park earlier sitting in Rover waiting to give someone a lift I was checking out all the buttons etc on the dash making sure they all worked,even finding out what some do and came across something on the dash that doesn't appear to do anything or even say in the handbook why it's there !

So guys,on the dash,just to the left of the larger oval with the mileage readings in it is a much smaller oval (clear glass or plastic) thing.
Is that supposed to light up or do anything ?
Just curious as to why it's part of the dash but my handbook doesn't say what it is !

If it is the oval shown the photo below of my ZT-T it normally flashes quickly when you lock the car and then intermittently to show the alarm is set.

If the alarm has activated on the car it will flash quickly on unlocking the car.
