the fixed equipment drive through whirly mop types I would say they do, they are catch pit or filtered and the chemicals used licenced...

The bucket and spray boys… not so much...
but there again, do you declare what runs off of your car and goes down the drain when you wash your car at home?

I use the car wash places because they are convenient, cheap and plentiful.

Would anybody here use oven cleaner on there car to wash it?

I suspect not, these hand car washes use a diluted version of oven cleaner and that is why it works so quickly.

You should see the state of the paint on cars that have this weekly treatment, no amount of polishing and cutting will get a shine back.

As has been said they use cheap chemicals. If you want it done properly do it yourself.

last time I took mine, about a month ago, after a week I noticed I was missing a couple of plastic grommets from the roof rails, which I am sure were blow out with the pressure from the power washers never again will I be taking to one of them, and will be washing it myself from now on.

Ive used them for years never had a problem. My cars arent new, will never be pristine but I cant be bothered to get the hose out, rub a sponge over the car only to find Ive missed a bit, spend 10 mins cleaning my alloys with a brush that flicks the brake dust and water onto my face then shammy it off then put everything away. No thanks.....
Best fiver I ever spend.

my thinking as well, well worth a fiver not to have the hassle of cleaning it myself.

Default Car wash observation.

I found out the drive though was are best as the brush and spray ones throw stones at you car so what I do if I not bother or in a hurry go though the drive thought then polish looks like new when i do it

Fair point, somewhat assuagedby my gravel drive and approved car wash products.
However the point is whether these 'pressure wash'people are registered and regulated and paying for the water they use,and that my Water Company is just not interested when it comes to checking them out.It seems to me that it is possible to tap into mains water, legally or not, metered or not, and start cleaning cars and collecting cash!
