We discussed some very varied topics in the Cheddar garden centre, from Metro seat fabrics to rare Rover 200 colours - who remembers Morello Plum ? (I always thought it should of been cherry...?? )
It was great to chat with someone that had first-hand factory knowledge

I must admit Paul, it was great to be privy to some of the information shared by Stephen and yourself over breakfast at Cheddar.
As you say, it was superb hearing some "insider, factory information".

It's been almost 2 years since I found X702UOK in the breakers yard, and with the NEC just around the corner, decided it was finally time to repair the VERY dented N/S sill. Strangely, it had far less corrosion in it than the O/S (that I repaired last year), but it would seem the car had dropped onto the sill section from quite a height (possibly off a high kerb, or driven onto a small boulder) then driven off the offending obstacle, denting it badly along maybe 60% of it's length. The extent of the damage:
2016-09-12 10.53.30.jpg I won't go into too much detail here, as I documented the repairs to the other side in another thread, but I have finally completed the homemade dent puller, which I promised to do last year, then never got round to it ! However, I'm pleased to say it worked pretty well considering the strength of the sill section, which was not only dented inwards, but squashed up along the lower lip. I'm sure many would say I should have fitted a sill section (and with hindsight, this may be true) but using the puller has meant that more of the original car has remained intact. Picture shows most of the dent removed and a quick coat of primer to help confirm the sill profile is now the correct shape again: 2016-09-12 17.08.15.jpg After a surface dressing of filler, stopper and a coat of etch primer, I applied new stonechip along the lower edge using three coats - I was slightly disappointed with the other side as once sprayed, it didn't look quite as thick as the factory original, which I was trying to replicate. This side is much better, although slightly smoother in texture than factory, which can actually be very rough if you look closely ! : 2016-09-17 12.02.28.jpg One small problem which has shown up since spraying the drivers side, is that after about 6 months, some very tiny lines have appeared in the lacquer coat. You can't feel them with your nail, they are so slight that I'd say it's more of a crazing than cracks, and unless you get down on your knees, you can't really see them. But it's annoying after spending so much time last year trying to get it perfect. So with this in mind and a descussion with the paint supplier, I decided to try a two-pack lacquer. This has the lacquer and hardener all in one spray tin. Last time I used a single pack lacquer which just air-drys over time. Only difference is the cost, single pack is about £8 / tin, whereas the two-pack is £22...!!! But better to do the job right first time It's a very clever can, in that you twist a tag located at the base when you are ready to use the product. This action breaks an internal seal which allows the lacquer and hardner to come together. Shake as normal for a couple of minutes and it's ready to use. Only problem is you then have about 8 hours to use it, after this any product left inside will go hard. Time will tell if it's as good as they say, if so, I'll be sanding back the crazed sill and refinishing next year This is the product I used : 2016-09-17 12.04.09.jpg Spray pattern was excellent and pressure is adjustable, surface finish looks good. States that it can be machine polished after just 24 hours, but I don't think it'll need it

Ive just read this thread, amazing!
I too hate scrap yards now, I loved visiting them as a kid but nowadays I find them terribly sad places so avoid them, I also cant stand to watch banger racing anymore. What a find! Looking forward to seeing it at the NEC. Last edited by timspencer; 7th November 2016 at 17:02.. |
