The garage has a good reputation so I don't think there workmanship shoddy.
My question is can any one tell me if the Freelander has the same engine.

Many thanks,

I had my three belts done and waterpump/idler/tensioner buying the parts myself mind (£200) the garage charged me £300 for labour.

So £600 not including the back two belts i would still try and get a better quote including all three belts.

The problem is finding a local garage who can do the job.
I do not want to drive it very far because as Dave (stocktake) say's the belts may not last much longer.

KV6 engine is the same, all together there are 4 belts, the one that drives the alternator/ powersteering ect. The main timing belt ( the one we had a peek at) an then on the other end of the cams ( passengerside) there are two smaller ones that drive the exhaust cams from the inlet cam. The small two should be a doddle to change so try to get the garage to do them inclusive of price.

You should also ask them for a second opinion Gerry, just to be sure.

Default engine noise

Thanks Dave.
I have found a garage,M & G The Independent MG/Rover Specialists, Bradford, who will change three belts and waterpump for aprox £400. I am sure they would fit all the belts if asked.
Do you think that the car would get me there?.

Also could I send you a PM asking for your help again,

Default Engine Noise

Just a quick up date,
The car is now going to Bradford to have the all the belts, tensioner, idler and water pump changed. If you can think of any other parts that are best changed at the same time I would be greatful.
Because of the risk of further damage it is being transported there.

Thank's to all who gave there advice and to Dave who came round and found the problem with the belts.

I will let you know what the garage found later.

Hi Gerry, cannot stress enough to get a second opinion from them, I would hate to think it was just a waste of money and the fault was elseware

Default Engine Noise

Engine Noise up-date.

Thank you dave for your help and advice, once again you are right.
The car as been delivered to the garage and they have inspected it.
There findings are that the Tensioner, Idler and water pump do need to be changed.
The Tensioner and Idler are, in there words, "the worst they have seen" and wondered how the engine had run at all.
There being so much metal bits floating around that they also think it best to change the water pump also.
It is possible that the belts may have jumped two teeth and cannot be sure if other damage has been caused until they have it running again.

From this report it would seem that its not the belts we should be checking but the tensioner and idler.
As these cannot be inspected without a lot of work. Would it not be possible to cut an inspection hole in the front, top, timing belt cover, so that the outer belt surface could be seen. Any marking of the belt (& noise from this area) would perhaps indicate they may need attention, so save major engine repairs.

The garage will return all the old parts so I will take photo's of them and post on the forum later.

Thank you again Dave for the time and help you have given me and of course to all who have contributed to this thread.
Great Club, Great members and thanks to all who spend there time running it.

Gerry

76000 miles on a 2001 reg. But no record of the belts being changed by previous owner.
I did have a look at the belts last year, about August time, and could still read all the belt markings very clear.
Hope this is of help.
