Engine Noise
Dave (stocktake ) had a look at my car to-day and it would seem that some thing is marking the outside of the cam belt, belt tensioner or water pump.
Since he left I have checked the water level and found it needed water,( some thing it has not needed before) so that would indicate perhaps the noise and marking is made by the water pump. My question now is doe's any one in the Leeds area know of a garage who could change both the belts and water pump ? |

Problem Gerry has is the clattering noise coming from below the alternator towards the rear bank, almost as if something catches clatters against something else and falls away again really is a serious clatter.
Just eased the front cover off timing belt on the front bank and the belt is seriously gouged, worn on the rear face. So something is tearing up the back face of the belt, only things that touch it there are: Water pump, idler pulley and the dreaded tensioner pulley that fell apart on mine, sounds very similar to mine. In all seriousness I asked Gerry to turn it of for fear of it doing serious damage. Thanks for the cuppa, enjoyed our chat, really really sorry about the diagnosis Gerry

Engine Noise
Thank,s Dave, your help was very much appreciated.
I need now is to find some one local to fix it . I would have liked to have taken it to Lates or Jules and know the job was done right but I don't know now if it would be worth risking a two hour + trip. Either It would breakdown or I would? |

Funny someone should mention a funny noise like this, mine is making a funny rattle when cold which disapears then comes back. Even when it is away you can still hear somthing along side the normal V6 noise, sounds like from the same area as well. Im still using mine until i can get it on a ramp at the weekend and have a look at the belt.

Just so you know, my engine developed a rattle/knock/clatter and this progressed into a screech. shortly after engine dropped on to 5 cyls with no comp on cly 6. A later stripdown revealed a collapsed bearing on the belt tensioner. A symptom of the fault showed up as damage to the smooth side of the belt. If i hear a similar noise now first thing i do is remove front sound cover and this gives acces to two 8mm bolts holding the belt cover on the front bank. you can then gently open the cover to inspect the smooth side of the belt. Takes 10 mins. Gerrys is damaged very severely, mine was also obviously damaged.

Engine Noise
I have been ringing round to find a local garage that could change the belts and replace the water pump.
Most say they do not have the equipment, others quote £1000. ( an Xpart garage). I have however been told by one garage that they can do the timing belt and water pump for £600.(but not the two cam belts ?) as this engine is the same fitted in the Freelander. The garage has a good reputation so I don't think there workmanship shoddy. My question is can any one tell me if the Freelander has the same engine. Many thanks, Gerry3 |
