Alloy refurbishment problem - 11 Spokes
I dropped off six 11 Spokes for refurb with a well-known outfit over here last week, asking that they pick the best five to re-work (and dump the worst).
The company have come back to me and said that after the acid dip and blasting processes, the wheels were painted with powdercoat primer and that two of the wheels had substantial corrosion which has resulted in pinholes on the alloy surface. PDF attached includes images they'd sent me of the damage on the primer powdercoat (with the last image being of one of the good ones). I asked that they file down and repair any corrosion as best they could and the chap has advised that they've done that and that another coat of powdercoat primer has been added, but that some pinholes remain (haven't yet seen images following this process). They "don't do" filler and the company has an excellent reputation over here, so I'll be interested to see how they turn out at the end of the week. Their office rep says that the pinholes on these two wheels should be barely noticeable once painted in Silver Sparkle, and that the 12-month paint guarantee will stand as per usual. Anyone else had this problem during wheel refurbishment? Cheers, Karl. Last edited by The Mighty Quinn; 1st June 2020 at 19:38.. |

That is outgassing, normally caused when the wheel is contaminated with grease prior to applying the powder primer, the first application of powder is too heavy, or they could be using poor quality primer.
Either that or there is trapped contaminants in the alloy which are being released when the wheel is raised to cure temperature. You can either ask them to retry, or get them wet painted instead Brian |

Thanks chaps.
Here's their process: https://www.nulukwheels.co.uk/the-process-2/ The rep says that the pinholes are down to deep-set corrosion that was present in two of the alloys (I'm not sure if some or indeed all of the wheels had previously been refurbed or not). Wet paint finish (Silver Sparkle) is to be applied over the primer powdercoat. Hopefully this, coupled with some of the repair works already undertaken, will result in a good overall finish. Will definitely have to keep the receipt for this one, though - in case things start to go awry (cost is very much at the upper end). However, must be said that the company have been very forthright and helpful thus far. Cheers, Karl. |

Drew, used to be in Washington, now in Seaham
HERE I fit my own tyres, and qualify as a trade customer due to me using him since he was at Stella Gill. He also talks in pound notes if required Brian |

Well, I got the wheels back from Nu-Luk, and I'm very impressed with the finish overall.
The spare, which was one of the two worst corroded rims left off (the worst was dumped), is the one that has a little visible pin-holing - but this can only be seen when up close (and will hopefully stay in the boot ). Will see how they hold out over the next 12 months, but I'm not expecting them to deteriorate quickly.. (famous last words!). Few pics attached.. Cheers, Karl. |
