Unhappy blue smoke!!

HI, I have a rover 75 tourer 1.8t with 70,000 on the clock .it had one owner before me and has sevice history. (on a 53 plate)
I have blue smoke on start up and the car would dissappear in it if left on tickover! I took it up the motorway last night (after dark of course) and after about 7miles it cleared , when i got back home it was no longer burning oil on tickover or under revs. today on starting it was clouds of blue smoke again and I will not use the car now.
It is definately oil burning as the smell is very distinctive, I have also noticed the dipstick level has dropped.

my question is what could cause this? I have read some other forum threads and people are saying either valve stem seals or turbo seals. Is this true, and if so can i check myself before spending money . Also does anybody know where there is a good honest and faior priced specialist near Redditch.

I'd guess turbo. The K series generally doesn't burn oil.

Turbo seals and probably bearings, usually caused by head gasket failure after the coolant in the oil cant lubricate the turbo as it should. I did a DIY seal and bearing change on my turbo and got it professionally balanced (a big must) for £120 (bought the bearing and seals kit off ebay) and sent the turbo to a specialist for a balance. If your handy with a spanner you can do it, I had no knowledge of turbos before I did mine. You can check the turbo by removing the big "S" pipe from compressor side of the turbo (the pipe thats also attached to the air filter box), grab the compressor and give it a riggle, a little side to side movement is acceptable as the bearing float on oil and as ur engine will be turned off there will be no oil there. Any forward and backward movement or too much play side to side guarantees it to be the turbo although its not a conclusive test as mine didnt appear to have much movement in it. Quotes for a new turbo went into £900 mark but you can swap yours for a reconditioned one for around £500. Personally I would get yours seen to, your right not to drive the car as it would only wear the turbo more and make it harder to repair. If you take it to a turbo specialist do not believe any stories that they cannot be fixed because they can, they use the story to get you to buy a new unit.

Turbo on my ZT whent exactly the same way as described at 19.5k in May this year, cost me £384 turbo Recon as new + 3 hours labour £150 + Vat including 12 months warranty, I asked the garage weather it was due to coolant damage as the headgasket was changed exactly 12 months previous due to very minor cylinder coolant weep but no cross fluid contamination, they replied it was common with other vehicles for turbos to go. Talking to engine design engineer turbo's don't like short journeys, I think this is why mine whent on such low mileage.
