Default Kv6 power steering bottle

I have never seen a gasket ,rubber or otherwise ,fitted to my power steering bottle cap. Mine has never had one fitted since i had the car. I wondered if other members have a gasket or seal on their caps .? ....... as i have never changed or replaced my original !!

Ever since I've owned my car I've noticed fluid misting on the outside of the PAS reservoir so after reading your post I went out to check for a cap seal.

At first sight it appeared that I too didn't have one. But after wiping the fluid from the screw thread I found a very thin and hard 'O' ring seal compressed against the underside of the cap and tucked into the end of the thread.

Thanks for the link to the eBay item Matt.

I remember from my days of servicing espresso machines, the seals between the group heads and handles would go hard over time and not seal properly...so of course I'd replace them. I too noticed that my bottle was leaking slightly....I thought the seal was missing...but no, it was there just that it was no longer pliable and sealed properly. Bought the replacement and all good now....just like my coffee machines.

My seal arrived and fitted. There was indeed an existing seal in there which upon inspection, did not appear to be any different in size or appearance. Not flattened in any way or damaged/squashed. The only difference was that upon tightening of the cap, there was not the usual "sqeak" at the end of the thread when fully tight. All cleaned and "de-misted" the exterior of the bottle but not yet tested over a few number of miles to see if its stopped this small but annoying spray residue . ...

After fitting my new seal for the power steering reservoir cap, i have rechecked the static cold level ,on a cold engine on the cap dipstick. It was about 8/9 mm above the max level. Unwittingly this is too high. I have never really thought that this would be of any consequence and probably erred on the side of caution , just should i have a slight leak,as i dont check every week normally and have never luckily had to top up. Looking at the dipstick on the cap there are 2 levels max and min , and she now sits half way between the two having syphoned off in total 8mm above this plus 5 mm (5mm being the half way point between max and min which is 10mm approx.) So now the question was why the ejection of spray ? The bottle itself is an open vented system. There is a vent hole on the cap screw turn handle and can be blown through quite easily. This seems to be the point of ejection of vapour /foam bubbles . The dipstick itself is a hollow tube, with a vertical cut along its length. It may be to trap bubbles caused by turbulance and let them climb upwards towards the vented cap . The vent hole on my cap points directly at the radiator rear when tightened and any fan or incoming air would most definitely blow this to a spray covering of the bottle area. The seal that i replaced on the cap is not therefore a pressure seal but just a cushion and fluid seal. I have not done more than a few miles yet to see if my lower fluid level has any effect but will be keeping an eye over the next few weeks. This reminds me a little of the effects of running the engine with a full level of oil on the oil dipstick as to half way ...

Interesting diagnosis! So you think the high power steering fluid level was causing the spray, and now that you've lowered it, you're hoping that'll solve the issue. Makes sense, especially with the vent hole on the cap pointing towards the radiator fan. Will be curious to hear if you notice any difference over the next few weeks.

Early days yet MBN, but may be the reason. Still under trial to see if it does stop the ejection . It is only a very very light mist covering on the bottle that has always happened over 14 yrs now. I would be interested to hear from others who have replaced the cap rubber seal ,if this has stopped the misting on the bottle. I should really have done mine first ,without reducing the fluid level , to see if the o ring cured it on its own. I will update after a couple of weeks as i dont do a lot of milage now , as the old girl is semi retired now..
