Default speedometer fault

Update sensor changed, reluctor ring area de rusted & cleaned, ABS modulator plug sprayed with elec contact cleaner, fault still there. Before I change instrument pod does this have to be T4'd to car or will it work OK if just swapped?

Further update Instrument pod changed Speedo still faulty, but plus side T4 not required for change to work. Back to basics check out reluctor ring & ABS connector.

The instrument pod might work but now the info stored in the IPK eeprom (VIN, mileage etc) does not match the info stored in other ECUs/components and will cause problems. As the IPK was not the problem refit the original.

I guess the heated rear screen doesn't work either

Sounds like you have a Can-bus fault, more than likely the wiring. Is the right hand connector on the IPK located correctly?

The Can-bus wiring is a twisted pair of yellow wires one with a black trace the other with a brown trace.

The Can-bus connects the ABS, EMS ECU, Autobox ECU and the IPK together.

The wiring goes from the ABS and EMS as two seperate pairs that go to the big clump of wires beneath the underbonnet fusebox. They then join in a soldered joint somewhere in the wiring that goes above the nearside wheel arch. From there it goes to another join this time a Header where it splits to the autobox ecu if fitted and then on to the instrument pack.

A break in the wiring will cause the problems you describe, it can be a time consuming task to get to the bottom of things. A continuity test on the wiring would be needed to establish if it is the wiring that's causing the problems

Will chek that r/hand plug is in IPK ok, then as you suggest follow wireing, one thing I forgot was the external temp was showing -30 at the same time as the other units went faulty.Shows I shouldn't have laid up car for the summer whilst playing with R8's.

Yes the outside temp is sent from the EMS ECU to the IPK via the Can-bus also

Default speedometer fault

Update 28th. Battery disconect, just incase hopefull, no change. Put back on spare instrument pack and bingo everything works as it should including the speedo. I will leave it on for the time being but if the mileage reading can be altered to read the original speedo reading then it can stay on the car. Who knows what gremlins are in the electrics.

Progress but don't think mileage can be easily corrected so you're stuck with your new mileage unless you want to visit one of the T4 experts. Do you now have an "err" message indicating a mileage mismatch ?
