Damp Repairs

Well I set about tackling the repairs to the damp patch on the caravan

Wallpaper stripped

On the outside I removed the old bodged up roof rail and replaced with a new one, whilst on I also removed the rear window and put a new sealant strip in place and sealed the high level brake light

Originally I was quoted £400 to tackle the internal damp patch, that was not including the roof rails or rear window, so far the cost of repair has come in at a total of £180 and a few hours work, but I know its done properly

Our caravan developed a leak, the front rail where the grp front meets the roof had been damaged causing it to leak.

Thankfully we noticed it before the damp was as bad as yours. We got it repaired, which cost £150. We are out in it this weekend and are happy that the damp has now gone, confirmed with the damp meter.

A cracking job you have done there, well done. I think I would have tried to get the wall board and change like for like, but it wouldn't have looked that good.

The reason we went for the 'Wood Board' is that on the opposite side the wood does go the full length, so we have always commented that the 'wallpaper' section there looked out of place.... by matching the wood board (which was also a lot cheaper) it looks correct, plus I used 15mm furniture board as opposed to 3mm wallboard, so gives strength to the section

On our Avondale we took the awning rails off to replace the old sealant that was going powdery.

We were amazed at the variation in the application of the factory sealant. It was well done in places but in others it was literally just pencil lead thick. The old sealant was easy to clean off with a scrapper after applying White Spirit. Messy tho'

Also the awning rail screws were rusting behind the plastic trim so where we could these were removed or drilled out, ground back carefully and new stainless screws used with nice good quality modern non-setting sealant.

It took about half a day each side to do on a nice warm summers day and then a further day doing the same to all the window hinge strips where the original sealant application was just as varied as for the awning rails.

A great sense of satisfaction knowing that the wet cannot possibly get in - and indeed for the next four years of ownership we had no damp issues at all.

Such an easy job to do - but such enormous benefit.

The real finishing touch was buying the new plastic strip that ran in the channel to cover the screws. The new one was bright white and when we had fitted this all round - and on the window hinge bars as well - WOW! - what a difference.

Transformed the c'van - took years off it.

It certainly looks better with wood both sides - I like "balance".

It would have looked odd to have that nice wood on the left and just wallpaper on the right.

My only thoughts are that it would be wise to make sure there was no water ingress on the LHS hidden behind the lovely wooden cabinets.

Apologies fot mentioning it - but worth checking out if you have not already done so.

Thanks, but the cabinet side is bone dry, had a damp test done.
