Have you checked out Colin's Ultimate Buyer's Guide? A tip I like to think of if buying from someone who states a diesel has had a recent service is to ask if the timing belt has been done. If they say yes, take everything else they say with a pinch of salt as it doesnt have one. Just a point to remember, if it is an auto '190' it will actually be a 180 , manuals were 190.

Mg zt
Ah yes I see this one does look pretty smart! The green is kind of growing on me now, it suits the mg well, could be worth looking at I think
Do the diesels have the god awful dpf on them? It's a pain in neck on my Mazda 3 and really ruins the car and destroys any gains in having a diesel as have to take it for a run as soon as I start hearing it regenerate! Be glad when it goes and I have an mg lol I'm tempted to buy the v6 as only drive about 11000 miles a year but worried about repair costs Thanks Phill |

No DPF's on our cars luckily! Isn't Marina Brian selling a ZT diesel?

1.8t
I'm thinking of a 1.8t now, they can be had quite cheap and in nice condition, would it be worth going for but budget for a possible head gasket failure? If they head gasket goes am I looking at a massive bill and could further damage be done? Also once it is fixed with the new gasket is that the end of the problems?

You won't look back from a 1.8 turbo, just ask anyone who has one.
Head gasket replacement from a competent garage, £250-£350. It will only go again as a result of coolant loss, that is only caused by you not being aware of the loss of coolant So fitting a level sensor is a must. If you can buy one with hgf, they are absolutely peanuts, and usually low mileage. |

1.8t
I love this forum! Get responses so quickly! Not like the Mazda one where you are lucky to get anything..
I would consider one with a hgf but driving it home would be an issue would prefer something running and then fit the modified gasket later on.. So do these only go if u dnt check the water level, I always believed they would just go at some point whatever you do.. Can you recommend anyone in Kent who would do a good job at looking after my car? Also at fitting at water level sensor? I'm very good at checking my cars every week anyway and oil changes every 6000 miles generally |

The original elastomer gasket will go with age as the coolant eats away at the seals. So they will nearly all have been replaced by now regardless of mileage.
Following that, the only cause for repeated failure is bad workmanship by who fitted the replacement or coolant loss and subsequent overheating. There is a forum trader down your way that could do the gasket and fit the level sensor, but I cannot remember his name, I am sure someone will be along shortly to point him out. |
