Default money for nothing

who's with me on this one, watching the programme 'money for nothing' where the host is allowed to rescue items from the local tip to recycle/upcycle etc and give them a new lease of life, the amount of times i'v been to the tip and seen something and thought 'i could make use of that'....but no,i'm not allowed to take it,years ago you were able to help yourself if you wanted it,i'd of thought these days with the country in 'going green' mode....let someone have it and make use of it if they can ffs

My local 'recycling centre' doesn't even allow the staff to take things of use, one of the guys there was telling me that someone had been sacked for taking home an old bicycle.
I know that many years ago when my grandad worked there that they could. He rescued old mopeds and made a good one out of the parts so he could use it to get to work.
My first bicycle was also one he'd acquired and refurbished.

it's really annoying tbh,why not let people take what they want if they can make use of it,saves it going to landfill

The majority of it does not go to landfill, it is sold, and as the local tip is no longer authority owned, but privately owned, everything there is seen as an asset.

Scrap metal sold to metal dealers, hardcore sold to be crushed for making roads etc, dirt sold for sieving to be resold as topsoil, wood sold for burning and so on.

The tip is no longer an inconvenience, it is a for profit business

We have just received a letter we have to prove we live locally to the tip, and from May you can drop off recyclable bits where people can help themselves to anything.

My local tip is still Council run. You now have to have a permit to take hardcore too (or any inert waste) and are restricted to 6 small bags a year! Any more and you have to pay.

I've a few things here rescued from the tip.
1930 HMV 101 Wind up portable gramophone in perfect order.
1951 Decca 1000, 60 inch projection TV (yes they made them then) fully restored and in GWO.
plus two Bush DAC10's from the fifties, one nice the other with a cracked bakelite cabinet.
Having a WEEE licence helps though.
