Default Clutch Fluid loss.

Hi Everybody
I was in the process of fitting a Chinese double din unit in my Rover 75 cdt diesel 2002 when i was routing the GPS wire under the dash i noticed it looked abit wet around the Clutch master cylinder area,i opened it up and it was virtually empty, Couldnt believe how the clutch was still working.
Now i fitted a complete new clutch unit and Slave cylinder about 2 years ago and have checked under bell housing and its bone dry so im really hoping its not Slave again.

I pulled back the rubber boot on the master cylinder and it is bone dry where the rod goes in.
Is there another place where the master cylinder can leak from that i cant see behind the pedals ? Ive checked all pipes good in engine compartment bone dry.

The place that looks most suspect to me is on the pedal side to me as its wet, but i know when i bleed the clutch after fitting new unit i spilt quite abit trying to fill it up.

If i do need a new master cylinder what do you recommend and where from please ??

cheers in advance julian

Hello Julian. Sounds like one or other of the seals in the master has failed. You'll have to replace the complete master cylinder assembly. They usually come pre-filled and you just connect them up to the slave pipe union located just above the gearbox. It shouldn't need bleeding if the slave and pipe is still flooded.

EDIT: DMGRS is the place: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/collections/...5480-stc000110

Reverse bleed the clutch, I've just fitted a new slave and it's so much easier, also clears all the air out better than the standard way. Just a syringe and small length of tube needed.

Had another look at the Master cylinder again today and after wiping it all clean a few days ago it is wet all down the sides again,It looks to me like the fluid is coming out of the reservoir so the master cylinder must be creating some kind of back pressue when pressing the clutch and forcing it out of the top.

Anyway ive got one on order from the link that was posted so just need wait for it to arrive, im lucky it still operating the clutch and i never would of noticed if i hadnt been under the dash sorting this Radio/satnav unit.

You have got the rubber condom fitted under the reservoir cap? If not then you will get leakage through the vent hole in the cap if the master cylinder is overfilled.
