Because it trips on at about 104C. It simply wasn't warm enough.

This is the regime:
104°C = Low fan speed - off at 98C
112°C = High fan speed - off at 105C

Not for definite. My 1.8 was losing up to 0.5l per week for 4 years (45,000 miles) and this was trickling down the block exactly as described. I changed the inlet manifold gasket and it stopped using water. It was leaking at the inlet manifold and running around the head joint and trickling down the front.

Steve.
The coolant wouldn't have been running down behind the exhaust manifold if your inlet manifold was leaking

Edit:

Unless I read all of the post

Sorry.

If you had read my comment properly you would see that I said it ran around the head and trickled down the front of the block (and therefore appearing to come from behind the exhaust manifold).

But still getting a tiny oily residue in the water, but no hydrocarbons ..

so pretty sure it still got a touch of HGF ..

How do you know the exact temps? Is there a method of getting the car to display it?

I suspect you mean no carbon dioxide. From a pH/'sniff' test?

What you describe is what's been called 'ghost HGF'. It's the loss of coolant and an oily exchange due to a fissure in the gasket between a coolant channel and an oil way. It can also leak coolant externally depending where the fissure is postioned. This is the sort of problem that can be fixed using a sealant, but it has to be done correctly and fully removed straight afterwards. There's a thread by Kaiser describing such a fix. But it's not everyone's cup of tea and unless it's done right will cause problems elsewhere is the cooling system.

Kaiser thread: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=36562

Ghost HGF in 1.8 engines is probably quite common and to an extent explains why so many head gaskets are replaced. Still, the higher running temperature does implie something more serious.
