The low speed fan is essential to avoiding traffic jam type overheating if it gets to 104+, but you shouldn't be getting at or above 100C in normal driving. Loss of coolant is, hopefully, the cause and the leak you've discovered must be fixed or the fan fix simply won't save the day.

Er, coolant trickling down the block behind the exhaust manifold? That will be HGF then.

Funnily enough in my case it was just that (external HGF) something that is not that uncommon on the turbo due to heat.A pool of coolant formed on the garage floor over night as the car cooled down but it just evaporated on the hot block/manifold while the car was running.I had ruled out every other possibility apart from the HG.Sure enough is was plain to see when the head was off.New MLS and all has been well since 2009 when I bought the car

Because the cooling fan's out of action. And may well be a prime suspect of causing the suggested HGF.

As said before the fan does work at one speed, fairly sure its only at max speed, when it gets pretty hot?

Its only got 2 chances & slow seems to be the duff one ..

But the trinary bridging is supposed to prove the hi-speed works ? and doesn't

The high speed always works on the later 2-speed fans. It's the slow speed that's important for normal running and aircon use.

Chris,
  • Was the engine running at the time of the test? It needs to be.
  • It's easy accidentally to choose the wrong wire. Yellow with a grey tracer needs to be bridged to earth, but the connector also has a grey with yellow tracer!

The 'info' clearly states in red type that the petrol engines need to be running Chris!
