I believe Sweden alerted the rest of the world, as they noticed high radiation levels a couple of days after the explosion.

It was only then that it was announced.

Every single one of them Died, I remember that we had radioactive sheep in the UK and there was a ban on selling them.

I think about 30 odd people died from the explosion and from the radiation afterwards. They are starting to repopulate parts of Belarus but the actual site won't be cleaned up completely for another 50 years.
