"Where is that steam coming from?".................
.........................................Asked the woman standing next to me at Euston station this morning. Her partner replied, "Hopefully from the that big shiney green thing up at the front".
Yes we are off on a day out to Carlisle but by steam train. Out with my brother-in-law, Michael, and two friends. Doing the trip in style, premier dining all the way. Being doing these trips for a number of years. Started with my late wife and we have kept the tradition going. We always toast Val's health, still miss her everyday. i travelled over to Totteridge Nth London last evening to Michael's house. We went and had a couple of expensive pints up at the Orange Tree at Totteridge Common, saw a nice 54 plate White Gold 75 in Totteridge Lane. After a couple of beers we returned to find my neice had come home from work and was preparing us a light evening meal. Sea bass and salad washed down with a glass wine. We was chauffeured to the station, and we will be collected this evening.

From Euston to Carnforth we are being pulled by a 1965 built English Electric "Les Ross" loco. Then from Carnforth to Carlisle we have steam, 46115 "Scots Guardsman". Built in 1927.

'Les Ross' will be the class 86 electric loco, I presume. It's a lovely machine and a nice contrast to the 'Scots Guardsman'.

I fired quite a few steam locos on the main line but never actually been behind one.

Afraid I can't get excited about A/C electrics. I regularly drove 86s, 87s and 90s, only advantage is they were cleaner than a diesel. OK they were powerful enough but, as with all electrics, sound like a Dyson on steroids regardless of the power handle position. Give me a diesel any day, least they sound like they are working hard at full throttle.
