Default coolant

Hi all,I ve a 2004 mgzt-t 2.5 v6 180,ive recently replaced the thermostat housing, and tried to replace the coolant, the coolant bottle is full but nothing is circulating, ive done the filling up slowly, air locks etc,but there is no movement of the coolant, and it just stays cool,I was thinking the water pump is broke, would anyone have any ideas on this,or how to test the water pump, thanks for any advice

Try taking the small pipe off that attaches to the filler neck of the coolant bottle. If the coolant then go's down and starts flowing from the pipe its likely you have a blockage in the filler neck.
If so you can attach a tyre inflater to it and that should clear the obstruction.
Thats what I done and it worked.

Peter

There's no circulation through the header tank. It's not part of the loop, it just stands on a stagnant leg. The small hose to the neck allows air to bleed from the heads when refilling. If the engine's running, there may be enough pump pressure to show coolant passing through when all the air's out. Once the cap's fitted that route is sealed off.

The 'full' tank is when the coolant just covers the bottom.

You have to bleed the air from all the internal traps or the system won't fill, won't circulate and won't cool.

Have you not read the KV6 refilling and bleeding method?

I did the Kv6 coolant fill yesterday. It is basically filled in two goes. Do look up the correct steps, but

1) Raise the header tank as far as possible. For me it was about 2 inches.
2) Remove the bleed bung in the big pipe just below the air filter.
3) slowly fill until a constant stream flows from the bleed hole then replace bung.
Here is where I may have gone wrong.....
4) I filled the coolant until it reached the max mark.
5) Started the car and ran at 2500 rpm until the thermostat opens. (My issue was that before the thermostat opened the coolant overflowed so had to back off the revs)
6) Replace header tank
7) When the thermostat opens slowly fill coolant to max.
8) Allow time for coolant to settle and keep topping up as necessary.
9) Job done!! But I will monitor the level daily for the next week.

Hope this helps - it seemed like an age for the start to open, but watched pot, I guess.

Jamie

I drained the engine via the bolt by the exhaust, and undone the radiator bottom hose,i then had to undo the hose from the bottom of the coolant bottle to empty it,I think there is a blockage somewhere but I havent got a clue where.

Check the hoses systematically. Follow the header tank downpipe and detach all associated clips holding that section of pipework to the system. You can then remove and inspect. It might be just a blockage in the header leg. With what is anyone's guess.
