Default "Flying Scotsman" from the footplate....

Best hour of television viewing for a long time , anyone else catch it ? if you didn't it was the Flying Scotsman on the Severn Valley Railway from the drivers and firemans perspective with no stupid commentary from a celeb who knows nothing just the interaction of the men on the footplate , never realised what is involved in getting one of these monsters to move and stop and twinned with some fantastic ariel footage , cannot recommend this enough any steam fans out there you really should seek this out its superb..

Happy new year one and all...

As an ex BR fireman, employed at Birkenhead engine shed we rarely saw any glamorous engines but boy did I shovel some coal. On a shift on the iron ore trains from Birkenhead docks to Shotton steel works it was possible to use all the coal in the tender and be sweeping up the dust to get back to shed. On an express engine it was usual to start in full gear but after a few revolutions wind the valve cut off gear back to about 35% and then fire little and often, usually about 12 rounds every few minutes or when the chimney exhaust was smoke free. Conversely most goods trains ran on much longer valve cut offs and demanded much heavier firing, a class 9f engine working a heavy freight would devour coal at a prodigeous rate, whereas the flying Scotsman was able to run from Kings Cross to Edinburgh with coal to spare. When I transferred to Gloucester and fired regularly on Castles and Hall class engines I loved the thrill of high speed running, and clean engines with evocative names, but for me nothing brings back memories of steam more than a picture of a grimy 9f or Austerity, oil caked connecting rods, boilers white with priming stains, and steam leaking fron every gland, happy days.

Certainly a most enjoyable program, the lack of the crass commentary normally stuck on top adding to the enjoyment.

A ton of coal and a thousand gallons of water consumed over sixteen miles

A lot of that water was wasted when the safety valve blew off. The poor fireman was ashamed of himself for letting that happen blaming himself for poor boiler management. There were some great camera angles of the locomotive and she ran like a swiss watch too. It was great programme and a great crew looking after her.
