That's brilliant to read. I bet it's been a massive roller coaster for him.

It is positive to hear that everything is going well for him. You might not know this, but part of my remit at The Royal Free Hospital was to run a clinic for people undergoing the sex change from male to female and female to male. To protect their identities during treatment + counseling, they were addressed by number, rather than by name. This saved a lot of trouble for those who changed their minds in going through with everything. I hope it works out for the best for your stepson.

Transgender people should use the toilet of whatever sex they identify with ie that they are changing to. I don't agree with communal toilets except within a controlled environment. I would NEVER use a communal public toilet....the thought is horrific.

On a rough crossing trip across the channel I managed to pee in all 5 urinals and back again without falling over. Good job there was only me in there at the time.
Cubical toilets are the answer. The above story was when I was 15yrs old so I learnt quickly

After a few pints there is nothing better than putting your hand on the wall so you don't fall over and peeing in a wall mounted porcelain bowl, as a bloke and that is all I can say

which toilet should a transgender person use?

Google search and you'll find a UK university where the students union want a urinal in every ladies loo and tampon disposal system in every gents.
I'm not joking, their reasoning is every transgender waiting for the operation should be able to use the cloakroom that matches their future gender and not their present one.
