Valid point, I bought a Connie with just over 100k on the clock, mileage didn't worry me because previous owners had cherished the car. I know some prospective buyers were put off by the mileage, to me the mileage proved the car had a Heart of Gold.
It's now got over 111,000 on the clock and still matches the mpg and performance levels claimed in the Rover handbook.
Horses for courses, a badly maintained low mileage car or a high mileage well maintained car, forty years of driving has taught me the latter is best.

The problem is when the owner only goes by the servicing indicator, it's purely done on mileage, timed services don't change the display!
A car that does 4000 miles or less a year may not have an oil & filter change for nearly three years, same goes for brakes and other service items.
A low mileage car owned by a fastidious owner would be a lot better so long as the annual service is properly done.
Well hopefully all will be OK - the service book is stamped up by Rover dealers / Rover specialists....

14378 miles
14663 miles
18040 miles
21242 miles
23416 miles
25226 miles
26964 miles
30580 miles

Looks like it was serviced every time it was MOT'd

and I just changed the oil at 35500 miles

It certainly looks like this was a pampered car as its totally unmarked and under the bonnet looks showroom.

As I posted earlier, my W reg 75 diesel has still only attained 62k, When I bought it I contacted the previous owner who had owned the car for a number of years and was so pleased that I was intending to take god care of it. In the 4 years or so of my owning Gilbert the mighty Rover, it has clocked about 2.5k a year, this consists of trips to Scotland, our annual holidays, when it faultlessly clocks up about 800 miles, and trips out on fine days to various National Trust properties. It never does a journey of less than 100 miles round trip, and is garaged every night. I guess what I am trying to say is that at 16 years old and with only 62k on the clock it is mechanically and bodily in top condition, as endorsed by Jules every time he services the old boy.

But can you really trust that service record?

The only way to have confidence about what you are buying is to buy a worn out, badly serviced, high-mileage car.

I think this is a good, balanced conclusion.

So what we are really saying is that a dealer service history is worthless ?

That's good because I intend to service it myself from now on.
