Modern hard drives are pretty robust, but sometimes the electronics in the external caddy (case) aren't. A fault can easily stop the drive from spinning up, or being recognised. New cases are available quite cheaply on eBay etc.
I've had a couple of similar external hard drive failures after only a few months of use. In both instances I transferred the hard drives into new cases (a simple job), and both drives worked fine. All the data was still there, and they are still working. It's worth a try, before going to the expense of data retrieval from a hard drive that may be actually OK. Just a thought, Jim
