Default Clutch noise when moving off?

Hi - can somebody clever please advise?

I've got a 75 1.8 Conny.

Recently, it's started making this weird noise.... Sounds almost like a moan. Only happens when you're moving off; kicks in when the clutch is at biting point, more or less.

It's louder in the wet than in the dry. Also it gets worse after you've driven for an hour or two - with the engine cold, it almost never happens.

Gear shifts are also a lot less smooth than they used to be - it's almost like there's a "clunk" somewhere in the gearbox, especially going from 2nd to 3rd, and the car tends to lurch forward when I release the clutch following a gear change.

Would be grateful for any help/advice with diagnosing it!

Thank you.

A production run around 2004 used some harder friction plates which gave this groan on take up. Mine used to do it and was always most obvious in foggy weather. MGR were aware and changed the plate supplier. If that's what it is, it's regarded as harmless. But mine doesn't do it these days -or I haven't noticed. It was only when first starting out.
