Unburned fuel smoke, CDTI
Hello guys if someone remember me, low mileage 75 owner from Lithuania.
I have more cars with Rover engines in my garage: 75: Freelander KV6 2.5, bought it with 88.000km: Freelander TD4 (same engine as 75 CDTI): So, about my last car- Freelander TD4. 130.000km on the clock, it is 81.000 miles. It is my first desel car, i have experience with petrol engines only. At the moment this car is head pain. I decided to write here because i believe that 75 users have more experience with this engines. Some of unburned, liquid fuel goes to exhaust. I checked and replaced all vacuum hoses. No vacuum leaks at all. Of course air filter and PCV are new. I tried to start car with intercooler hose removed- then when i press accelerator a little i feel rough revving. MAF- new. Boost solenoid- new. Vacuum servo- tried another with no success. All intake manifold gaskets new. EGR fully closed. Checked all connections from solenoids, sensors (fuel pressure as well) to ECU- zero ohms, so, problem somewhere else. Car starting very good, i feel that some cylinders one second not working, but it can be plugs. And, i can see some unburned smoke at idle as well. Maybe leaking injector? Or pressure too high? I'd hazard a guess at a faulty injector. Have you tried treating the car to a bottle of decent injector cleaner? Forte is recommended by many on here.
If that doesn't work then removing and cleaning your injectors, or buying a known good one and swapping it over should do the trick. Mickyboy on here has all the correct kit to properly test his injectors so I'd recommend buying from him. . Last edited by Mike Noc; 16th November 2018 at 07:21.. |

I think the same. But probably i would remove all injectors ant take to Bosch service for checking and cleaning.

my Tourer stank of fuel but taking advice I filled a new fuel filter with diesel injector cleaner, ran the engine 30 seconds, turned it off and the following morning drove it like I stole it. I then took it for an mot, no smoke and no stink of fuel so this is a cheap option to try. If it does not work then on to the next more expensive thing good luck macafee2 |

Do you know if the pcv valve has been changed? With the engine running, take oil dipstick out and see if oil starts to come out of the dipstick hole. Is the egr clogged up with gunk from the oil mist and exhaust fumes? Have you checked The intercooler pipe?

Remove EGR valve and have it sunk in diesel overnight to clean it. I did it with mine, and I also fitted a blank. EGR valve just throws back gunk into the engine.
Also a good 'drive it like you stole it' Italian tune up does help. Put some premium diesel in it, a fuel injector cleaning additive and run with that.

Yes, this has caused a few similar issues.

Today i tried to disconnected maf, absolutely same.
Now situation maybe more clear: Car starting nice, when cold- i can make revs higher without any strange smoke. When engine getting warm- between 2000 to 3500 revs i feel misfires, after misfires unburned fuel goes to hot exhaust manifold and makes smoke. Probably now i will take all injectors to bosch service for testing, if they ok- will measure compression. Strange thing, seems Rover L and K series are not problematic engines at all. |

All injectors tested, one was little worn and replaced, together with all new copper o-rings. Now all are good and in specs.
Just tried another crankshaft position sensor, because unburned fuel could be result of bad timing. Without any success. Same white smoke on higher revs. Engine starts fine, have nice idle, almost without any vibrations, all good until pressing accelerator. Stupid question, but it cannot be fuel filter? Just maybe HP pump receives lower pressure and cannot send to injectors good strong amount of fuel, and injectors can't make good pattern?
