Default Raspberry pi starters kit?

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a starter kit? I've got a spare £100.

Winter is setting in and I want to have something to do for the long cold nights and miserable rainy days.

Cheers

Dave

Depends what you already have.
Things you need (but don't have to buy new) depend on how you are going to use it. If you're an experienced computer nerd then you could run headless and do everything over ssh from your main PC. If you didn't understand what I just wrote then you'll be wanting to find/beg/borrow/steal (kidding) or as a very last resort buy the following;

Monitor with HDMI input. (can be a flat panel TV)

Keyboard and Mouse
Micro SD card minimum 8GB

Also useful: USB Flash drive

Don't forget to go get the latest full fat Raspberry PI as well .

There's plenty of add-ons and accessories - what you get there entirely depends on what you.

Cheers Avulon, been thinking about this for a while. I was tempted by the Arduino but decided I'd rather go for the Pi for more flexibility.

Don't know what I want that flexibility for mind you. In fact dont really know why I want a Pi...but for now making lights flash and bells ring etc and excising the very much unused grey cells sounds like fun.

Been many years since I looked at code and made up some bits and bobs from Maplins. So all tense and purposes I'm a complete beginner.

The Arduino is actually very useful for making lights flash / bells ring and etc. Is also cheaper and just connects to your PC/laptop with a USB cable to program (you write the programs called 'sketches' on the PC and transfer them to the arduino). You don't need to learn Linux or anything to get going - so might be a good option for you. Also I should've added to the need for RPi list is a good power supply, something the Arduino can be very tollerant about what PSU you use - and powers via the usb when connected .

If you have a NAS then a media centre to play onto TV?

If you have (or are thinking of) smart home then you could use it with Openhab or similar.

Go for it Dave, I've been using one for years, this one is a 3B+ and it does everything I want, although it runs out of memory when I watch YouTube in multiple windows.

It uses very little power, you can power it from AA batteries but it's a bit fussy about mains power, get the genuine power supply not a generic one.

I use a USB keyboard and mouse but it will quite happily run a Bluetooth one if you need all 4 USB ports for something else.

There's lots of info on their website plus free updates and OS. www.raspberrypi.org

Cheers Mick,

I've given a list to Santa!

I've asked for a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and also asked for a couple of sensor and project kits. Plus a couple of books. The actual pi comes with a few bits and bobs ( case, PSU etc )

The project kits you can get seem quite good value. Looks like they come with educational courses / instructions. No idea if they'll be any good but the reviews are mainly positive. Looks like a few companies sell a generic kit.

Absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with it but it should keeps me busy for a while.

Thanks for all your responses.

Can I ask, can you drop a pc completely and use one for general browsing (Linux mint or the like)?
Thanks
