Mine's in my garage at present waiting for me to get the time and inclination to complete the engine swap. Symptoms very similar to the OPs.

Without rehearsing the whole saga, I have run out of things to change so it has to be HGF or cracked head/liner. It all started when the rad went.

I bought one of those chemical tester kits (the ones that turn the chemical a different colour when exhaust gases are present in the coolant) but it didn't indicate a problem. However it's definitely not healthy. Just hope the spare engine I bought on trust is OK

Is a cracked liner a big job? - can it even be done? I am not familiar with wet liner engines.

Liners can be swapped easily, plenty of info on the net if you want to see

Thanks Trikey, my google skills obviously aren't up to much, as I'm not seeing it.

Currently, the car is still on the road, and running fine, just using a lot of coolant, so it's just being run on old OAT from other cars that I've drained. It doesn't always pressurise either, which is really odd, so we're running it until it stops, before going for an engine swap.

Frazzle - mine was exactly the same (except I was using fresh OAT mix).

The coolant loss wasn't huge, and varied.

Occasionally there wasn't a big pressure release when I took the cap off, but mostly there was.

Temperatures were fine.

It finally packed up (had a major overheat) on the way to the National meet a couple of weeks ago (although it still hasn't failed catastrophically - once topped up it would run again, but couldn't keep the temp down to sensible level any more).

If you get pressure in the coolant system on a scale that forces water out (full cooling system, fan working and thermostat opening ), the engine needs to be repaired. Heads off minimum.

Exclamation KV6 head gasket still in doubt

Hello Jules,

I reckon that you'll be interested to read what Trevor has found when investigating KV6 pressurisation and projectile ejection of coolant at low temperatures.

Edit: Here's another one for you Jules.

Back to this again.

The car has had its coolant flushed several times, yet persistently uses a lot, there's some mayo on the oil cap, it's had several new expansion caps, new radiator, and a whole host of other bits in a seemingly helpless attempt to solve the issue.

Today, it boiled, sufficiently to put the red light on and move the gauge right round. It is now sitting around 100-105 degrees in traffic, and yes, the fan is a Revotec and working perfectly. Time to scrap this engine, I think?

Why not examine the engine first and see if it's salvageable and rebuild it?

I'm really not convinced that KV6s rebuild well. The only two people I know who spent a lot of money getting KV6 engines rebuild completely wasted their money.
