mk1 and mk2 headlight question
Have been looking around at headlights, and have noticed that mk1 projectors seem to be more expensive and less common than ones from a facelift (mk2)
Is it possible to swap the "glass" part of the head light between the 2 styles, meaning I can buy the cheaper lights? Ta Chris |

I take it you have the halogen reflector lights?
if it were possible just to swap over the lenses it would be a bad idea as projectors have a lens of their own to beam the light out in a set pattern, if you then put that through the reflector lens then the pattern would be all over the place |

Good question this.
I had to take apart my mk1 projector lamps the other week due to the motor ball socket falling off the main reflector. To my suprise with the top glass off complete with the black plastic insert the silver part looked the same as the face lift lamps, even the indent at the top of the silver bit between the dipped and main beams. So it wouldnt suprise me to fine you could fit facelift lamps with mk1 projector fronts. I might give it a wirl next week and report back. |

Mechanically, yes they will fit but projectors generate a different beam to the reflectors. The lens effect of the reflectors glass will ruin your beam pattern, which is an MOT fail....

Anything is doable given enough time and the availability of parts.
To swap headlights between a Mk1 & Mk2, you're going to need at the very least, a bumper that matches the lights you want to use (as the lights are different shapes/profiles. And possibly a slam panel if the mountings are different (not 100% sure on that). I think the leading edge of the bonnet is the same profile, so once you've changed the lights and bumper, you'll probably get away without needing a bonnet as well. Seems like an awful lot of work just to change the lights |

IIRC the back part of the lights are the same, ie, the black plastic bit, the front lenses are interchangeable between the mk1 & 2. I believe Klarzy found out during his fitting of the led rings to both types.
