spare parts

I just had a 'heated' discussion with a relative about my Rover 75 purchase. Basically, he thinks I am nutcase for buying the car, because he says I will have trouble servicing the car or getting spares.

In the two days I have had it, I have found service centers through reading this forum, but is he right that in the not too distant future I will have a car that is impossible to get spares for?

That is rubbish - at the meet in Luxembourg the top brass of Xpart were saying how they are pulling out all the stops to continue supplying the essential parts. Where a problem exists it is in their interest to source new suppliers etc. and they do.

So far, although there have been some shortages they have been sorted. Trying to get the population at large to acknowledge there is no problem is a different story ... dare I draw parallels with the current Northern Rock Bank situation ... ?

Not to mention the fact that so far it appears that the MG7 will have quite a lot of compatible spares too ...

The only important thing that is difficult to obtain at present is the cooling fan and I am sure that will be remedied soon.
Your relative needs his brain tested if he thinks manufacturers are going to ignore all the Rovers out there, thousands and thousands of them. You can still get parts for Triumphs, Austin Healy's, Reliants all cars with lower volume sales than MG Rover I am interested in knowing what he drives? probably an Escort/Focus? a better to be safe than sorry car. Enjoy your 75 there will be parts around for long enough

Hi Ray. We'll I suppose if Caterpillar go down the tubes there would be some risk to the spares supply, but I don't think that will be any time soon.
Enjoy ypur car, theyr'e supeb, maybe more reliable than a Peugeot too ! !

..........so I took a blind leap of faith and purchased an MG ZT-T 135+ CDTi DIESEL ESTATE (try rattling that off to your French Insurance broker).
Why? Because it's probably the best thing ever to come out of MG, and I beleive that spares will be available (albeit not quite as quickly as some marques) to keep it running.

In support of Christophers post, we have been assured by CAT logistics that parts for our cars will be supplied by them to the repair / upgrade market in perpetuity.
There are something in the order of 3.5 million modern MG and Rover cars on the road, this is not a level of business that CAT would contemplate ignoring.

Don't know if there's any truth in this, but................I was told at the weekend that presses set up in China are about to start up producing new body panels, with supplies coming to UK soon.

Ray, just to explain crofts comment . . Rover outsourced / sold the spared parts part of the business to Caterpillar about 5 years before they folded.

Also bear in mind the car (in particular the CDT's) have a very high percentage of BMW parts. I can;t see them going bust

When the wife and I were in the showroom, we narrowed the choice down to the Rover 75 or a Volvo S40 (am I allowed to say that here

). From a desire point of view, it was the Rover all the way for me as I had wanted one for ages.

I talked to my wife about the spare parts and servicing as Rover were no more, but she was already swayed towards the Rover just by looking through the window. I decided to take both for a test drive. We all know what the Rover is like to drive, but I found the S40 to be quite dull - both to drive and the interior - it just had no character whatsoever.

Well, when we got back, my wife said to me, 'If you buy the Volvo I just may not speak to you for quite a while'! She was completely in Love with the 75 - the shape, the interior but most of all the dials! She loved the old fashion charm and the colour.

My heart wanted the Rover, but my brain said the Volvo, but after chatting for a while we both grinned and went for the 75
