Default Brake pipe corrosion

One of my advisories on my MOT this week, was rear offside breakpipe slightly corroded.

I know this can simply be cleaned with wire wool, and coated with waxoyl as a temporary fix, but wondering what others have done in terms of complete replacement.

So far I've found one guy who can change all four pipes to new copper pipes, for £120 all in. Other then this can't seem find much more information, from searching here about this problem, so I guess its not so common. I don't want to replace them myself as it sounds like a pig of a job to do.

brake pipe corrosion is a bit more common than you think..mot failure due to this problem has been quite common on here.

the price quoted for renewal seems reasonable.

Hi Fraser, yes it can be a pig of a job if you've found someone who'll do them for £120 then if it where me I'd let him.

They've been replaced on both of mine, Last one was £150 IIRC including MOT I could have done it myself as I have the kit to do it but wasn't up to it at the time.

It's a very common problem but most older cars have had them replaced.

Russ

if the corrosion is not seriuos enough for them to fail it - clean them up and protect them - be fine

Mine are now in Kunifer (cupro-nickel alloy) after an MOT failure.

I had an advisory, so changed them before the next test.

I was horrified how thin they were to only get an advisory. I would consider replacement unless the corrosion is very light.

Most cars suffer with this problem, its not that expensive to sort out

I got all the gear to replace mine and when I took off the first one found that the corrosion wasn't as bad as I thought. It had just kind of bubbled up so I replaced the first one anyway and just cleaned off the other one and treated it against further corrosion.

I would get it done and am indeed getting it done on mine in the spring. You can always get them cleaned up etc but will be a niggle in the back of your mind. Why they don´t do these things as standard beats me. Suppose they want the trade later on

Had mine done a couple of years ago. On safety systems it's better to be safe than sorry. "Be fine" ain't much consolation if your brakes fail at 70mph.

Cheers
