They do suffer the same but the early 1.1/1.4 closed-deck blocks, main bearing rumble issue aside, do have the best track record and with the latest upgrades they should be the most reliable - all else being equal. However I'm with Des Hammill in his belief that the root cause of the HGF issue is the cylinder head's inability to keep its cool and in the absence of a new and better designed head we can only mitigate.

However, it's only the 75 that has a pretendy temperature gauge, at least the earlier cars temp gauge has some relation to what's going on under the bonnet

Thanks chaps,it seems most think HGF is a case of when not if then,as with the 1.8's.The reason for my question is that I'm considering a 1.4 facelift 45.

I'm sure I've seen the 1.4k rated at 84ps and 103ps.Are there two different power outputs or is one of these wrong?

There certainly is, if you have a 84 Ps, it will be marked on the bottom of the VIN plate, to upgrade, all you need is a 103 throttle body, and matching throttle cable, as the restriction is the size of the butterfly

You guys are just too good

I've just looked it up on Wiki and you are quite right the difference is the T/B.It says the more restricted one was intended to place the engine in a lower insurance group.

cheers chaps

Yes, I was minding my own business on richmond bridge, london when I got shunted hard from behind straight in to the car in front, guys in the car that rammed me did a runner as the car was stolen, so car was writen off.

Shame as it was really fun to drive, good engine pulled like a train, five speed box big alloys (for the size of car.) and cornered really well, you could really chuck it around. I do remember that due to the larger wheels it had the turning circle of a small country.

once again the head gasket on my 200 series 1400 was replaced with just a basic gasket and that was years ago and its still holding like new, yes they do go but like the 1800 its down to poor maintiance and not checking the levels ,but as with the 1800 if looked after will NOT GO unless something like the water pump fails or the car has hada poor repair done on it or the cause of the failure wasnt trace and just put back together .... my 200 series i think i will be keeping it even when i get my next 75 ....yes its that good

I seem to recall that I had my 414 rolling roared at Minisport before and after tuning and it went from 95 to 125bhp following the fitting of a superchip, pipercross air filter, exhaust manifold and full system by Moto-build Racing. The drive back home that day was so much fun !
