We had a 1979 Colt Sigma 2000 (also known as a Galant) at one time the "fastest 2 litre production saloon in the world" (so said the adverts) it had quad headlights, Reclining back seat (not electric like the scorpio above, but way ahead of its time) and when we parked it anywhere we went it would draw a crowd as nobody had ever seen one before (there were only 2 of them in Ireland at the time) They are almost impossible to find pictures of these days, ours was like this one only metallic gold with a tan vinyl roof:
Then of course there is this: My last V8.

Mine was a Saab 900 Turbo, same as this one,
only mine was Metalic Gold, hence my 75, had to sell it when I got a company car, the chap who bought it weighed about 20st and couldn't get behind the wheel, chap he brought with him had to drive it, nearly told him to take a hike, but wallet overcame heart. Still miss it.

Just after leaving school a friend and I were given a Hillman Hunter similar to this
Unfortunately our garage was broken into and the car was sadly vandalized to the point where there wasn't much left for the scrap yard to sell. I sometimes wonder of what it would have been like to drive today. Also had a Renault 19 Chamade, had head skimmed, remapped ECU and £100 worth of air filter....Needless to say it flew like a rocket. But now I'm a family man, and settled down.....I'm not ready to sell my 'old gal', if I ever did. I'm thinking with how rare some parts are, she may have to go on the organ donor list.....lol |

The Triumph 2.5PI which is still the yardstick for all subsequent cars.
At the time we had two growing children, a labrador and we took a caravan on holiday. The car simply would not pull a caravan off a dewey field. We bought an LWB Land Rover, 2.6litre - a bit of a culture shock - but it didn't have any trouble with dewey fields. Huff, who corresponds in another place, has a PI and we are very jealous. In all honesty I regret selling any of my cars, because when they leave they are always in better nick than when I got them (Exept Xantia No1 which was a foot shorter)
Thats why I'm keeping hold of the 75, I have finally learnt my lesson. My 416 was a damn good car though, proud to say had 2 MOT testers nearly fighting over who was buying it off me. In the end unfortunately had to sell it to a relative who tortured it to a slow death Exactly the same as this one

During my working life I used to change my car after 2 years and there were several cars that I would have retained if they had been just for my private use.
However in 1972 I bought a new Hillman Hunter H120 and liked it so much that I kept it four 4 years and covered 85,000 miles. The H120 had a Holbay tuned engine with two twin choke Weber carbs and it was a very fast car for that time. It had a HGF but I was able to change the head gasket in an evening. Eventually but sadly, it had to go. In 1988 I bought a MG Montego 2.0i and ran it for 8 years and then passed it on to my son who had it for another 5 years. It was a great car. |

BMC123 - A good friend of mine had a thing about the Mitsi Sapporo (Saporro ?) - very similar to the Colt - he had 5 or 6 at one time but I think they all rusted away. He always said that they were very heavy on petrol - to the extent that he comtemplated doing a diesel conversion.(!)

Cars I wish I'd kept?
3 out of my first 4 cars:
(1) Morris 8 1937 2-seater tourer (would now be called 2+2), and I saw one only yesterday in Craven Arms (the town not the pub) Shropshire. (3) Morris 1000 Traveller, 1958. (4) 1961 Mk 1 Sprite (Frogeye). Number 2 was a 1953 1172cc Anglia, which should feature in the other thread, Cars I'm glad to get rid of, and the only Ford I've had in 44 years' motoring. malcolm |
