Default Abbreviations nightmare!

Is there a reason that Abbreaviations are used so much ??
not every one knows there meanings.
a typical post reads ....Help my ep and omb came loose from bcu unit,
right you may know what it means but what about the rest of the members who dont?. please use the word and not the abbreviation with exeption to the obvious one's eg,etc which are in genaral use.
or put a list up of them all

They could just ask? No-one on here is gonna mind if someone asks what a certain abbreviation stands for. I've had to ask a few times myself lol.

SWMBO for example. (she who must be obeyed)

BTW (BY THE WAY) What's ep and omb stand for?

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a list for people new to the cars - if they know what the terms mean, they'll probably have a better chance of finding out about related issues. PCV, EGR, FBH etc. are all terms I'd never come across before buying my MG so there is a bit of a learning curve.

OK, it is a bad habit.

But unfortunately it's a shorthand that is used very commonly.

There's always a compromise on when and where to use these abbreviations, and often a reply is being posted for someone who will know what it means.

If I had to type Fuel Burning Heater each and every time I tried to advise someone with a problem what to look for, I'd get very bored of typing it. And what about Anti Blockier Systeme? Or should I use the technically incorrect Antilock Braking System? Lots of letters when it's a fair assumption that most people know what ABS means.

What I try to do, is if it's a post aimed at someone who is new, or maybe will be followed by a lot of people, I'll put in the full name and the TLA (Three letter acronym) and then just use the TLA for the rest of the post.

Did you see what I did there?

Anyway, please lets all try to live and play nicely. No-one uses these things to try to be exclusive, but sometimes it happens.

You ought to try the TLAs where I work. People are forever mixing up the ELV that I own with the EVLS that a colleauge owns. That with the FBS, DWA, MSG, IRUE, NGS, BCM, LDS, TSG, all talking to each other via CAN, LIN, MOST or similar!
