Default Possible purchase is SORN and no MOT

I am looking to view a car and drive it back if I buy it but it is SORN AND has no MOT.

I thought about booking the MOT and driving it straight there but if it is SORN, can it be driven?

The owner seems to think he would have to tax it to get it off SORN but then it would need an MOT

You can drive an untaxed car to and from an MOT as long as it's been booked in advance. You will need insurance though.

Does the distance matter?

I checked this out with my local constabulary I bought a car in Barnsley, and drove it to Gateshead where it was booked in for its MOT

As long as it is insured with minimal 3rd party, and pre-booked for the MOT then it is fine

However if you are stopped and the Police do a vehicle check and find a dangerous fault they can serve a prohibition notice on the vehicle, in this case you cannot drive the vehicle any further

Found this on www.askthe.police.uk

The law makes no mention as to how far you can go but we would suggest that the distance is kept as short as possible because even though you are exempt from having a valid MOT certificate in the circumstances described above, if you are stopped by the police you could still be prosecuted for any defective parts on your vehicle e.g. exhaust, brakes and tyres etc. Additionally:

if you call in at shops etc. on your way to the MOT, it may be held that you are using the vehicle for other purposes and the above exemption won't apply;

the further you travel the more likelihood there is of your vehicle triggering an ANPR camera and you being stopped.

So I guess it's a case of whether you're willing to chance it.

I did this years ago with a car that I bought, it had been unused for 9 years and I drove it 150 miles home....I wouldn't do it now as the police are a lot sharper,it did pass the MOt though!

Eh!!!! How does signing a piece of paper invalidate a SORN, surely you need to go on line and tax it to cancel SORN. That's the only way I've cancelled my vehicle being on SORN

Signing the log book does not invalidate the sorn! The sorn runs until the car is taxed again, be it the current keeper or the new keeper! Whoever told you that is talking absolute pants and is completely wrong!

If you have trade plates that covers you for everything including the insurance, the trade plates are already taxed and insured, only thing it doesn't cover is the mot but it means you can drive it wherever you want really.
