Default Temp jumps up

Not sure if any one agrees with this but once that temp gauge goes to overheat this is an indication that there is a problem.
In my experience with this engine once over heated it will need work.

unfortunately most of what you need to inspect will require you to remove the top end and look at the thermostat case. I had the same problem. I was 150 miles from home in the middle of no where. I had no choice but to nurse her home. My problem caused one of the hoses to split and almost destroyed all of the vent pipes as they become very brittle and snap. I bought my car from someone who had it constantly serviced but only drove very short journeys. I did the usual checks before leaving OIL,WATER and TYRES and all was fine. When I stripped my engine I found that the thermostat housing was cracked about 2mm below the block and only remove did it become apparent that this was an old problem that until now did not cause a problem but after 350mile of motorway It pushed it to the point of no return.
So now I will have to replace the:
2 rubber hoses
all the breather pipes and I would almost be sure that I will need to have the head checked, skimmed and all new gaskets.
so now it is gonna cost me a fortune in part.
I am very lucky to be an old school mechanic and will be doing all the work myself.

I would also like comments and possible problems that overheating causes.
To the layman the damage from overheating can almost destroy your engine so let give em an idea of what kind of problems to expect (unless there is already a thread that I have not found).

technically it didnt over heat ..... just ran out of coolant due to the leak hence temp up/downing quickly. luckly for me i had that 1l of coolant which i am hoping will have saved my engine. also since i have descovered the fault i didnt rev my car over 3Krpm ... just in case.

guess ill know more tomorrow though.

Kevin,

On a V6 no need, unless you have positive symptoms of head gasket failure (e.g. oil/coolant mayonnaise).

There's been some over reaction here!!

Ivan was aware of his stat leak & very brief overheat and the KV6 will cope with this unlike the 1.8 !!

As I've said before a leaking stat can be observed without even removing the engine cover .
A good torch and a sense smell will detect a coolant leak around the Thermostat area.

We always confirm this before changing stat by pressurising system to 10 PSI and any leaks are quickly apparent.

I've known KV6 engines to survive even when the heater goes cold due to insufficient coolant so don't panick Mr Mannering !

OMG that was painful (fat fingers), and took me some 4 hours.

oooh and i mannaged to snap the T pice on the cylinder heads breather ... Grrrr!

the 90 degree bend disintergrated, what a PITA to get that out!!

anyway all done now, refilled (as per haynes) with coolant (3L of 50% oat used), gunna watch the coolant level like a hawk for the next month or so.

If you have broken the T Piece on the breather pipes, might be worth fitting one of these
