Hi Trebor,

I have watched this case develop from when you first posted about trying to get hold of the gears.

I have the later skull cap type power folds and some kind person whacked my driver's side mirri a while back causing the gears to mesh & then the motor to burn out, losing the powerfold facility of course.

I note that you have a picture of a new motor for the skull cap version.

Can I ask where you got it, as I am looking for just the motor unit to replace the damaged one in my driver's mirror.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, regards, Rob.

It is a new one but promised to another member as a spare unfortunately. I got hold of it during my many contacts with companies trying to sort out the gears and cannot get any more.

If your motor is no good have you considered splitting it apart to see what gears are inside ?

Thanks for the reply. I took the old one out ages ago to make it easier to move the mirror in & out manually, the passenger one still works as a powerfold OK.

I have since lost (probably disposed of the old unit unfortunately. From what I can remember it was a motor, similar to a scalextric motor, with a gear on the end that simply drove against another gear to turn the mirror, less likely to wear in my opinion, but when some idiot on the wrong side of the road hit my mirror it must have caused the gear teeth to mesh together, effectively seizing the mechanism, once this happened the motor tried to run but burnt out pretty quickly. I thought I could probably just source a new motor, but upon testing found that the small circuit board it is attached to had a lso got a burnt out chip on it (presumably from the increased motor current).

To be honest both the early & late mirrors are of a pretty **** design/quality, as it only takes a small tap to ruin them.

Regards, Rob.
