I took the insert out as drilling plastic and wood together will always be awkward the plastic will probably melt and foul the bit plus you only need a small part of the insert to retain the gaitor.

Just found an easy way to get the insert out.
10-15 seconds in the microwave heated up the glue and a twist and a tug it just slipped out |

Sorry forgot to answer
I also used the Microwave method but be carfull a few seconds at a time as if the handle has any water content left in the wood it could split A lot of wood turners season green projects in the same way! |
