RoverRon has been very helpful, suggesting the MAF may be sending out too high a signal, but I'm not sure how to test that and I don't want to buy a new one in case it isn't that. I also didn't like to pester him too much over the phone!

But I'll spin the wheels first to make sure they are free....

You know what, I'm beginning to agree with Mr M3nderez, maybe its my driving style and the fact most journeys are under 20 miles.

For the last 3 months of ownership I've been doing the mpg brim-brim method. I filled up today and the mpg had dropped from 29 to 25 !! Thats with the MAF disconnected. So, I'm beginning to suspect it might actually be working ok.

I'm still confused, but I've plugged it back in line....

Why not try a 50 mile run on the motorway immediatly after brimming the tank at a leisurly 60 MPH with no hard acceleration, Brim again upon your return and check your MPG then, if it has not risen to above 45MPG then the problem has nothing to do with you driving style ( although your driving style will not help ). Try this on a Sunday morning when traffic will be at its calmest

I take it you are not driving with gearbox in Sports Mode?
That drinks the fuel for sure if you have a heavy right foot.

No, not often. And I can't tell any difference anyway. Which is actually a good point. I wonder if my auto box is stuck in sports mode?

Anyway, I'll try a long run could go to the meet I suppose - can you pay on the door?

I may also take you up on your kind offer of another maf to try - just to see the difference.

Finally, how would I know if my car had been chipped by a previous owner, or remapped or whatever? That could account for the particularly good acceleration and poor econony? I'd spot a synergy, but the ones you see on ebay are tiny things. Where would they plug in? How would you undo a remap?

Other than driving and knowing the basic unmodded car you cannot see a Remap but all boxes should be visible.

If you are in SP mode it will firstly tell you that on display and it will go close to red line before changing without going into top gear (5th) in kickdown, very often if at all.
You could when going along at 65MPH drop into 4th and see if the revs jump up if not you are stuck in Sports Mode or have a fault.

If you car has had a remap it can be reset to original configuration on any T4 unit.
You would of course then have lost any remap programs but you could always then add the Synergy as and when you required it.

Also, it revs to 4150 max in both Sports and Eco mode. No difference.

Perhaps I need a T4 session, or a code reader...

They all have to go via the MAF one way or another so follow the leads,
If they just go from MAF to right side of engine and connect there, no Box is wired in.
Battery box is the normal Hiding place for any Tuning box, but have seen them wired to the Fuse Box area in Passenger Floor foot well .
