Quicker warm up!
Here's something some of you might find interesting, I only have a short journey to work of about 7 miles. Untill now it wasn't untill I was almost pulling into the yard that the heater was showing any signs of warm air, defrosting in the morning seemed to take ages.
Last night I reconnected my egr thinking the hot gasses from the exhaust might make a difference, wow did it! the frozen window was clear in half the usual time. I put this down to thinking it cant be as cold as I thought but once I had done the first mile the heater was already blowing warm, by the time I had covered the first 3 miles the car was up to half on the temp and the cabin was becoming lovely and warm. Just thought I should share this in case it can help anyone else:lol: |

thats a really important point for cars in our climate. There may be a gain for 6 months of the year, but for the rest, your discovery shows the practical benefits of retaining the (cleaned!) system.

if anyone else tries this let me know how you get on and if it make any difference, it also seems to have made mine a little smoother to set off also.

Whats an erg?
Excuse my ignorance, but what is an 'erg', where is it and why was it disconnected?
My car isn't too bad at warming up, but with the winter still to come, I want to make sure I have the best set-up! |

From a diesel pioint of view the EGR is part of the emmission control system. It allows exhaust gasses back into the intake cycle to be "re-burnt" with the fresh air/fuel mixture. Disabling or "bypassing" it is thought (the debate still rages!) to have a positive effect on the running of the car, hence disconnecting.

Has anyone tried blanking off part of the radiator yet? It worked wonders in the 50s.
Remember diesels should be running at 90-95 degrees C for best performance. I'm not jokin'! |

Back to basics for this one - what's the worst that could happen if someone tried this and it went pear-shaped - engine overheats a bit?

I used to sell them back in the 60s they had poppers on certain panels to allow opening on warmer days. If I remember correctly the best sellers at the time was for A40s and Moggys. Made from leather and retailed at £5 - 10s - 0p which was a touch pricey at the time |
