2.0 cdt 2002 idle drops every 3 secs & grating noise
Hello all,
May I say what a great forum, stacked full of great posts. I have trawled through many looking for the problem my 75 has but to no avail. I have just purchased a very nice 2.0 cdti 2002 connissuer, with black leather interior, cruise control, heated seats. However, 250 miles into its new life with me it has developed a problem. Every 3 secs in idle and during driving the idle drops (not much) and there is a low grating type sound. No noticeable loss of performance. I have noticed the bite of the clutch is very low compared to my old saab 9-5. It has 130k on the clock. Does anyone have any ideas what this may be. Paul |

A couple of things come to mind. The diesel uses a rubber damped/sandwitched crankshaft pulley which is known to fail. This leads to grating noises. The other thing is the air conditioning compressor. Does this noise only happen when the A/C is set to 'Auto'. The compessor has a magnetic clutch that can grate when worn.
The clutch issue may or may not be significant. You can't compare a Rover clutch with a Saab clutch. The low bite point however, may sugest it's low on hydraulic fluid or that it's reaching the end of its life. The clutch system is not the most robust design and its sealed-for-life master cylinder often benefits from a refill and bleed. There's lots of info around on refilling the reservoir and bleeding. |

Many thanks T-Cut, the next day the noise was gone, anyway it came back the other day so I turned off the air con and it went away. Turned it back on and it came back. So it seems to be the air conditioning compressor.
Do you know if they are expensive and complicated to fit? The noise has gone away again now but I'd rather get it fixed in case it gets worse. |

Compressors are around for about the hundred squid mark. SMC had some but not sure if they still have diesel ones in stock.
Biggest problem with fitting is getting the system degassed, and then regassed. Specialist equipment required. For a V6 petrol I was told four hours to fit a compressor. No idea how similar a CDT is though. |
