rattling windows.....the cure?
Following the suggestion by ANDRERIJO that the rattling windows syndrome is because the glass runs in rubber channels which have hardened with age and which have no felt or softer material next to the glass as on most of the cars I have owned I searched for some self adhesive felt strips. I bought two metres of 25mm self adhesive anti squeak/rattle felt tape on E Bay and, to avoid weather damage, fitted it on the inside of the window channelling. It is only 1mm thick but, so far, that appears to be sufficient to cure my rattling.
The vertical section( above the door handle) is not a problem provided that you ensure that the bottom 1/2" is below the lowest level of the glass in an open window. That section alone seemed to do the trick but I decided to do some of the top edge too which needs to be trimmed so that it sits along the seam in the rubber as in the photograph which means that the rising window does not actually touch the edge so does not try to rip it off. I cleaned the rubber with cellulose thinners but you must be careful not to let touch anything but the rubber. I though that 1mm would not be thick enough but found, on my car, that a 2mm thick piece would not allow the window to close! As you can see it is quite unobtrusive and, when the window is closed you do not notice it at all. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1810751752...84.m1497.l2649 This was my source but it was for only 2 metres so I have no doubt there are better deals out there. This was my supplier but it was only for 2 metres so the other link looks better value. I have added it to my first post. Last edited by wuzerk; 14th September 2013 at 17:16.. |

I used to suffer the rattling window problem, I read a post from someone on this forum that it's caused by the glass rattling in the channel. As the shape of the door and glass are too 'perfect', and the glass isn't being biased one way or the other.
At first I didn't believe their method for fixing it, but thought I'd give it ago anyway. It was to run the window down fully, wedge a large pillow/bunch of rags in the door near the striker, close it on to this, and then quite heavily force the top of the door inwards. I did this, and it worked, so I did all four the same, never heard a rattle since. |
